I have an interest here because I used to drive a 524td (there's a thread on that around here somewhere). They sold it in 1984 and 1985 and, per my understanding, stopped because they considered diesels inconsistent with their performance positioning.

A few years ago while in Frankfurt I saw a great diesel stationwagon at a BMW dealer and actually considered trying to bring one over; then I remembered the rareness of the 524td and lost interest.

I did see a diesel VW Toureg on an auto show recently and they said it was big and powerful. $7000 more than the gas version and, overall, $70000.
