I did purge the line with the manual pump. The engine was running before I bought it. I emptied the fuel tank, and all I can say is it wasn't diesel fuel. Now I have clean diesel, installed a new filter and reprimed the system, including loosening the injector lines at the injectors until they ran fuel. When I crank it now, it occasionally fires, but doesn't yet start. I am getting some black or grey smoke out of the tailpipe. The engine seems to be in good shape, with 350+ pounds of compression. Also, when I crank it the oil pressure goes up to 3 bar. Is there any technique, e.g. holding the pedal to the floor like you would with a flooded gas engine, etc.? I am recharging the battery right now, since I discharged it getting the system ready to go. Thanks guys for all your good advice already.
