One problem with the blower motor being intermitant are the motor brushes. You will have to remove the blower motor and look at the brushes. Drop the passenger knee bolster. Unbolt the 3 bolts (IIRC) and take a look. If they are very short then either replace then (do a search on this), buy a new motor ($$$) or get a used one.

You need to do a search on this. This has een discussed quite a bit. The search will help you learn about the heater system and how to diagnos any problems. With the blower switch in auto It waits for some warmer water prior to starting. YOu can press the HI fan button and it shoudl come on imediately. Again do a search and learn about your system.
