My old 72 280SE 3.5 had a single rear fog light. It was not built into the existing rear lens assembly but was externally mounted to the bumper.

In Germany that was a life saver because it would get so foggy on some of those roads that the rear foglight was the only way someone could see you in front of them.

I've seen other european cars here in the states with the rear fog light, so I don't think it's illegal and, it may save your car!!
