Which shop manual are you looking at ?
I think you need the MB shop manual for the 616 engine to do it safely and correctly.
You can use a bolt and washers for instance instead of that slide hammer..I think that is shown in the manual. The addition of the Haynes 617 manual also helps sometimes due to its better pictures.
You need to look at your engine to determine which bolt head socket you need.
If you are looking at the shop manual the first part of each section tells the exact size of the tools you need... including any which you need to make yourself.
