Lotus Notes has always been billed as 'groupware' and aimed at corporations, and many features depend on their being a server for your client to synch with.
That said, I have the Lotus suite installed here, and seem to be able to bring up my Lotus calendar (Organizer) without synching up to anything or even being logged into the corporate network I have Lotus for.
A handy way to calendar for free is to use My Yahoo. I think you can even sync up a PDA with a Yahoo calendar, if that's your thing.
