Ok, I've taken the bait. Yesterday, I added 3 oz. of acetone to 14 gallons of diesel. My fuel mileage yesterday was 406 miles/13.98 gallons=29.1 mpg. I go through $250 worth of diesel in a month, so a 20% reduction saves me $50. Even 10% saves me $25.

I now have over 100 miles since and this is what I have to report:

1) Engine seems to be a bit smoother at idle, maybe just me.
2) Fuel gauge doesn't seem to be moving as fast, hmmm.
3) Transmission doesn't flare as bad on the 2/3 shift anymore.
4) Steering seems to be tighter.
5) Radio reception is better.
6) Front suspension rattle is gone.
7) Rear passenger window works now.
8) Driver's seat seems firmer.
9) Glow plugs aren't needed anymore, yahoo!
10) The oil cooler lines have stopped leaking!
11) I can go 85 mph at the same rpm as I was going at 60.
12) A hottie in a 600SL came up to me at a light and said the exhaust smells like a rose petal brushed with honey on a spring day. She wanted to know if I could make her car smell like that and would I follow her to her place where her twin sister, who loves diesel Mercedes, is a massuese and...

...then I woke up.

So far, I haven't noticed any improvements. It'll be Tuesday or so before I fill up again. I've never gotten over 30 mpg in this car, but if I do, I'll try another tankful. If not, oh well.

I will report to the forum at my earliest opportunity.

Note: when adding acetone, DO NOT use the little cups that come with Nyquil - they last about a nanosecond when filled with acetone.
