This was the first garage I worked in so it must have been 1968 or 69. One summer sunday got a service call from the 4 lane hiway, a young couple in a 62 Pontiac convertible had a flat tire. No wonder. The left rear shoe was worn right down thru the cords until it blew. No spare. No dough. All the other tires bald as a baby's butt.As I was changing the tire I noticed the brake drum was worn completely in half. In other words there was a flat plate going around on the axle and a ring holding the shoes on just sitting there. Asked if the brakes pulled, he said they had been acting a little funny for about 2 months.
Fixed them up with a second hand tire and suggested they drive home, slowly, on the old road (they were about 70 miles from home). Don't know what happened but I expect they ignored my advice the way people usually do and went on cruising down the hiway at 70 MPH with no brakes and bald tires.
