Worn guides and seals would cause oil burning.
Oil dilution is usually due to a rich fuel mixture - perhaps lots of short-trip cold-weather driving or, possibly in your case, a FI malfunction or mis-adjustment. I've heard these 4.5 D-jets tend to run rich.
