to answer my own question, for anyone who wants to know:

one easy way is to use a simple pump, the likes of which you can find installed on hand-soap dispensing bottles. lash a tube onto the output, drop the stem into your bottle of fluid, and pump away.

i put in redline MTL. everyone here swears by it, so it's probably ok. the redline gear oil went in the rear axle... actually the bottle was .946L, and the spec was 1L.. i hope that's close enough.
