It's not just starting in public schools, it's been that way for years. Grades are almost meaningless in elementary and junior and senior high, which is where the attitude of entitlement in college kids comes from.

I saw a real interesting item on TV a while ago about an inner city school in Atlanta I think which had achieved staggering success with almost no assistance from anyone. How'd they do it? There were various things implemented. One. Junior High was separated from lower grades. No contact between 6th grade and 7th and 8th. No tolerance for indiscipline in any way. And dump half the curriculum and concentrate on nothing but old fashioned basics. Reading, Writing and Math. Once students were able to handle those competently at the required levels then fluffy stuff would be introduced. But as the principal said, if your kids dont get the basics right everything else is a waste. Oh yes. Also no social promotion. If you didn't meet the standards you didnt pass. Period.
