I don't know why, either. A hackberry is a nice tree if it isn't near anything. But it's roots will break concrete (like a foundation) and it's berries are prized by migratory birds--they'll s**t all over your car or patio, etc. Also, they tend to get heart rot like a wateroak and so in a strong wind you might get half a tree in your house.

But away from the house out on the lawn or a back lot, they're great tree. The leaves rot quickly and disappear, the limbs that get shed rot quickly in compost, and the fruit attract birds and squirrels (see caveat, above).

Felder is too pure. New need a consulting biostitute.
