There's an easier way, and you don't need but half the can of adhesive.

Remove the remnants of the old pad and as much adhesive as possible (you will learn to hate Liquid Nails at this point!). I had to use a blunt paint scraper and a whole can of adhesive remover, and still didn't get it clean.

Spray on one last coat of remover and wipe clean, then fit the new pad with the hood all the way back (on pre W123 cars you have to live with the hood half open or remove). Get it where you want it, edges tucked under, etc, then take a broom and prop it in the center. Pull the top half of the pad down again, making sure the bottom stays put. Spray three LIGHT coats of adhesive (3M 8090 works best) on both hood and pad. You want just a complete coat, it will go on in "splatters" == this is fine so long as it's completely covered. The adhesive will sink into the pad, so don't think there isn't enough there. If it's sticky to the touch, it's fine.

Allow to dry until just tacky -- if you put the pad up sooner, it can fall off again before the adhesive dries properly. Install the pad from the center out using only very light pressure until you are certain it's where you want it, then rub firmly by hand.

Lift the bottom half and spray the adhesive, allow to dry, and press into place.

Easy.

Note that a coat of the 8090 will re-attach a fallen pad put in with the regular adhesive and it will stay up -- my brother's has been in place for over a year now!
