I think your jumper cables had more to do with it than the fact that it was a "normal" car. You really have to look carefully at jumper cables to avoid buying junk. I've seen many that look real fat, but its all insulation with only a thin conductor, and that is poorly connected to the clamp.
Buy good cables.
