Keep the engine with the tranny. They are fundamentally different transmissions that have different control and valve body requirements. Also, there should be a solenoid or two on the engine's fuel distributor that mate up to switches on the transmission.

You might need to add a relay or two to make these solenoids work. The relevant schematic is in the 108 service manual.

lastly, you might have a problem with the front drive shaft coupling. Keeping the 280se drive shaft may be the right solution. Otherwise, getting a used 280se/c drive shaft will do it. You'll know you can't use the sedan's drive shaft if your tape measure says so.
