Question New Engine Break-In w/Biodiesel?

Although not a M-B, I just installed a brand new indirect injection 30 HP Yanmar in my sailboat. Should I break it in with dinodiesel or can I use B100? Or a Blend? Does it matter? I plan to ultimately use B100 though. Any Ideas?

Run regular diesel fuel, what is that a left over 3GM or one of the new 3YM series? I think thats what they call the new ones.

For B100 make sure you have a couple filters installed,(thinking Racor) Yanmar's little cartridge jobs will clog fast.

Reminds me that country singer Willie Nelson bought a brand new Benz and started running WVO through it immediately, said it freaked out the dealership where he bought the car.

I installed it on our 1974 Vindo 35' sloop and it seems like a good motor, although I am relatively new to marine diesels. It is indirectly (old style) injected, the next higher series has direct injection. My mechanic had to custom make bolt on brackets for the mounts, as the beds were offset fore to aft. Yanmar did not like this, they had concerns over vibration. Without MAJOR hull modification, this was the only way to fit it in. The vibration is exactly as it should be, moderate at idle and virtually disappearing at running speed. BTW Yanmar painted the entire engine after it was assembled, belts, hoses and all. The paint from the hoses began to flake into the bilge, which was a pain.

If it were me i wouldnt use dino diesel then later move to B100. youll clog a filter that way quick since the diesel sludge coats the fuel tank. happend to the passat TDI since we would go on and off with bio. Now we just stick to B80-B100.
If you use just B100 you wont clog the filter since it doesnt create a sludge coating on the tank, and you wont clog a filter.

As long as the bio is of good quality you should be ok. If its from a commerical retailer ask them if it was made and tested to ASTM specs. If its homebrew make sure to wash and dry it properly to remove residual methonal/lye.

I think the fuel filter clogging deal may be a bit overblown. My car ran off of the devil's tea for over 100K miles, and i have been on Bio for 30K and i have yet to clog a filter.

Yeah well this is a boat guys. They have enough fuel filter problems without B100. Most boats have filter set ups that make MB's spin on's look like toys.

Mounting a new engine in an old hull can be a pita, thats where all the time goes. A custom engine bed is usualy always needed. Lots of times you need a new shaft, stuffing box, and strut as well.

Most marine engines are painted after they are put together, belts and all!

Good luck with it, Yanmar makes a nice motor. They are simple, almost never break, and parts are pretty cheap and easy to get.

B100 isn't dirty, won't clog a filter. D2 is the 'messy' fuel, maybe that's why boats, as you say, have 'enough filter problems'.

Lots of boats sit, so water is always a constant problem. Algea is another. You should see some of the crap fuel we pump out of sailboats fuel tanks because they maybe were using 5 gallons of a 30 gallon tank for the past 10 years.

If you have brand new tanks and lines, and keep an eye on it you probably won't have to many problems.

I deal with this every day, you cannot compare a car to a boat, two totaly different animals.
