Is it time to add a Biodiesel Forum to this site...

...or is everybody fine with the biodiesel questions being commingled with the straight-ahead diesel posts?

I'm not volunteering for moderator duties or looking to engineer the whole thing - I just think it might be time to give Bio its due. On the flip side, diesel prices might plummet in the future :D, so having a Bio Forum around might not have any importance :(.

Thoughts?

Fredmburgess 03-14-2003 09:56 AM

Hey Joe, I voted "yes" because I'm one of those "fuel geeks" :) Actually, I think it's an excellent idea that can give a little more focus to the issues. It also would help keep the other posts on topic so that those who aren't interested in biodiesel or WVO as fuel don't have to slog through the posts. To each his own.

No matter what, this site and forum are absolutely invaluable. I can't thank everyone enough as my $800 project car has turned into a darn fine daily driver that I don't hesitate to take any distance. I try to do my part and order everything from Fastlane (thanks, Phil). Their service and everyone else's combined knowledge and experience have made this great fun.

Thanks all. ...and oh by the way..you really should try biodiesel or WVO..petro diesel won't last forever and we might as well be ahead of the curve! fmb

How about including used lub oil, maybe call it "alternative" fuel?

300SDog 03-14-2003 11:02 AM

The question is...... to what extent would a separate bio-diesel forum rob this msg.brd of information that interests ALL diesel owners - regarding stuff like fuel filters, injector timing and maintenance and diesel engine performance.

Am voting "no", thinking that another diesel forum would be redundant as many issues overlap........ but this doesnt mean that I would not thoroughly enjoy a separate bio-diesel forum - or that "alternative fuel" forum would not be more instructive as highly focused, separate entity.

Btw, have recently heard that Kentucky is converting its school buses to run on bio-diesel fuel.....

I'm all for it.

It might be useful.

I came to this forum from the biodiesel.infopop board (someone recommended it for tinkering advice). I think that everyone who would frequent the biodiesel/wvo/svo topic would hit diesel discussion, too. And, those dyed in the dino hide petrodiesel users wouldn't have to get annoyed at our tree-hugging, dumpster-diving, libertarian proclivities and could avoid us if they wanted.:D

btw, I started (oh, I'm sooo humble) a thread on the biodiesel.infopop board about all the other fluids required in my car. One of the replies was from somone with a '64 Rover that started eating oil like crazy. Prior to doing a total tear down, he decided to do an experiment and is using canola  from the grocery as his motor oil. He'll be posting the results soon. If he gets positive results (or any results), I'll share it here if anyone's interested.

I am always scouring the diesel forum for biodiesel posts and updates I might have missed. This is something I am very interested in.

Let's go for it!

Sounds good to me!! I keep coming up with more questions the more I research Biodiesel. "diesel prices might plummet in the future" Not bloody likely. I doubt well see below $1.30/gallon ever again. Now is the time to learn to make bio, that way even when prices do fall, your bio recipes will be perfected, your processor built, your wvo sources firm so the price of bio should still be half of petro. I think any variation of diesel fuel, is still diesel fuel. By people posting bio-diesel topics here, it would give people some possibly good ideas. I am not a "tree hugger" per say, but I do like the idea that our cars would run on a plant product that we can grow over and over again. Someone posted about be really low of diesel, stoped at a local convience store, bought 3 bottles of Crisco veg. oil and drove on. Remember, Rudolph Diesel first used peanut oil as the fuel for his new type of engine.

Look at my thread

I think it is time Biodiesel, WVO and SVO had their own forum. :)
There are enough threads to populate a very good forum. :)
Have a great day.

Alternative fuels...

I agree with the previous suggestion for the new forum title, "Alternative Fuels." The many forms of diesel fuel could be covered and we might even begin a little "crossover" posting with the gasser crowd in the future feeding of their rolling beasts. Anyway, many of us own/drive something that burns gasoline as well as our OM designed wonders.

Mixed emotions on this one. This forum primarily supports a parts business and I don't see how how a the new forum would extend to that goal.

This is a Mercedes forum and there is no such thing as Mercedes biodiesel or SVO.

infopop is already there and I can't see that a forum here would serve a need that isn't already being served over there. The forum there is split into SVO and Biodiesel forums and I think it is for a good reason.

If there is a new forum started here I think people should have to take a test before they can post. I can already see the new threads popping up every time someone filters a bucket of oil or changes a filter, blah, blah, blah.

Alot of us are not into BioDiesel so it would be a good idea to create a seperate forum so all those posts would be filtered from the Diesel Discussion. :)

An edited qoute BTW. The diesel engine is in fact a compression ignition engine- as opposed to a spark ignition, steam engine, turbine engine or any other engine. Mercedes makes compression ignition engines- of which all new models currently are designed to utilize diesel #2 or #1 or a combination of both for fuel. All past models were designed in the same fashion. "New" (ha! as evidenced by the original fuel of the compression ignition engine) fuels will power the engine as or more effectively as petrodiesel. Mechanical modifications that these fuels may require can and will be sold by someone, and are being done so right now. What's to stop Fastlane from stocking and selling the parts and information needed to complete a current 616/617 or other MB engine to run on
alternative fuels? I hearty YES in my vote, but as previously suggested: ALTERNATIVE FUELS. :sun_smile

Whoa... how about it Fastlane?

On one hand, I like that the biodiesel/alternative content is mixed in with the diesel forum, as it allows me to follow the one forum instead of clicking into two places, and it seems to me you can generally tell a biodiesel thread from other threads based on the title. Also, I like the 'advertising aspect' of it. And it seems a lot of the topics of interest to one group are of interest to the other.

On the other hand, I wonder if a separated forum wouldn't attract new posters who would be happy not to 'slog' through all the non-alternative-fuel content..
