W116 Rusty front sway bar mounts (?)

Has anyone ever repaired a rusty front sway bar mount before?!
My mount AND plate have ripped from the firewall and go BANG whenever I apply the brakes. Is this sway bar essential to wheel alignment?

That car may well be sounding its death knell

If it has ripped away like that the only solution would be massive welding repairs, as thats all structural area and needs to be fixed. Did just one break away or both? Do you have pictures of this????

Yes the sway bar is essential to wheel alignment, it keeps things from moving around, we had a part of the bar break on our 83, see the epic thread on repair here:

W126 The EPIC has BEGUN... Project "Sway" is Underway!

I do think the end has come for your car though, unless it still drives ok even with it loose like that, maybe it is usable as a city-beater for a bit longer...I'd not trust it on the highway though, thats not safe! The W116's are known for rusting badly, and it sounds like yours is definatley one of those.....

Aha well, luckily I am skilled in such repairs!
I'm an apprentice body man and have extensive structural repair and welding experience. this little task is no problem for me, I was just curious to know if I could drive without a sway bar at all...

I have a weeks worth of rust repair planned soon, just for the front stuctural members the front rad support I need to rebuild and repair some rust in the front fender wells. My GP relay is hanging on by a thread..
it's really no trouble for me, I just need the TIME as it all comes down to, TIME and MONEY I have rear wheel wells and rockers that I will also hopefully be putting on this summer as well! I will certainly post some photos as the come in the body repair threads.....
