W126 300SD Trim Removal (with pics)

I don't know the proper term for this plastic trim that I need to remove, so I took a picture and drew a big, yellow arrow:

So my question is... how do I remove this trim?

I'm sure some of you will be utterly aghast at the streaks of paint. Sorry. I'm doing the foam roller method, and I simply did a poor job of masking. For a newbie, I'd say the hood and fenders turned out fantastic. There are a couple pictures of the front end on my flickr page, if you're interested.

Anyway, I have the whole rest of the car to do, and I'd appreciate some advice on getting this trim removed gracefully (i.e., I realize I could just yank on it, but I'd rather not break it off.)

I recall those being loose once on my w126 300se. I just pressed them back on. So it must be the opposite to remove. You can always remove the interior door panel and push the retaining pins out.

Probably some sort of plastic pins that pop in and out. I'm sure Pete Geither knows.

The top of the cladding are channel slides (like on the inside door panels) the bottom are plastic push clips.
Start at bottom of cladding and pry pins out, then slide panel up. Start with one of the smaller panels like by the rear door and you will get an idea of how they are.

Is this pretty much the case on all MBs? I need to get the inside door panels off of mine, but haven't really looked at them yet.

I could only speak on the 126's - but probably so. You can also plan on replacing some of the push pins, old plastic doesn't have much give.

Are they somewhat generic or are Mercedes push pins unique?

It's 5 coats of Rustoleum "Hunter Green" thinned approximately 50/50 with mineral spirits. Yes, I removed the grille to do the hood... fairly easy to do, and that saved it from any inadvertent streaks

What's with the Great Stuff in the trunk well? If you did that to plug a rust hole you will have created an environment that will allow rust to spread like wildfire.

I'm not a welder, so I couldn't tack in a piece of metal. I wire brushed the superficial stuff, and pumped Great Stuff behind the body panel to give it some rigidity. I repaired the hole with wire mesh and Bondo. I'm pretty sure that's an anaerobic environment, and so far there hasn't been a rust wildfire...

What does POR do that prevents rust from growing? Isn't that the stuff you'd want to put on that spot?
