If it is a $150 beater then paint it like they do in Peru.

Hey Derek:

Buy a couple of
of big cans of Sherwin-Williams housepaint.

Then approach the car with a big paintbrush, or a broom, broadside on.

Then paint.

Then apply that bumpersticker I had made for you: "I'M a MERCEDES BENZ DIESEL - MIND IF I SMOKE?"

Job done, hit the street.

Nevermind all that nonsense about stripping down the paint, sanding, prepping and removing the bumper and windshield.

It is a BEATER, ffs

And an added benefit of a beater, no one will EVER, EVER argue with you over right of way when they see you coming. I owned a car like that once in San Francisco. It was wonderful. I just loved it, having my way everywhere I went. You will too!!!

The traditional beater aka rat is done with flat black rattle cans and a case of Beer... One gets applied while the other is consumed.

for another 150 on top of your 50 of rustoleum you can go to a Maaco shop and let them to a 20' paint job and sit home and drink beer while they paint your car. You fingers won't be bleeding from the hand sanding, and they'll paint the insides of the jambs also. Even for a beater, 200 isn't so much.

Sounds like an horrible physically draining job, hand sanding a massive 126 body. Good luck to you, and JimmyL will probably hunt you down if you don't document this project in detail.

Go with the Tractor Supply Valspar.

JOHN DEERE GREEN

is a lovely color.....LOL!

Unfortunately, My SEC has one of those 20Ft paint jobs, or at least partially, with a Tan paint stripe.

You get that sanding thing down and I'll bring the SEC up and I'll let you see if you can make the orange peel go away......LOL!

Let me understand this...You ROLL the paint onto the car??? This I gotta see.
Let us know when you are going to do this and we can have a mini GTG to watch.

Dieselkraut does glass work?? HMMM I just might have to come up and have him replace my windshield with a good one from a SEC in the bone yard since I cannot find real Sekurit Glass any place close or price(didn't try the MB dealer though.)

Let me get this straight, you want to watch and heckle this kid while literally watching paint dry? Someone has too much time on their hands.

I went with the rustoleum paint job method and I'm happy with the results for the price. I used mineral spirits to thin the paint. I found that a foam brush worked better than a roller for applying it most of the time. The paint will be thin enough to go on without streaks. I applied 6 coats. (Probably would've been better with 8). It still looks just as good 6 months later, as long as I wash it now and then.

Yup. It looks quite nice if done with care, see this site for results on a Corvair

Then paint.
I did that once with a 1936 Ford I bought. It had about 20 different colors of primer and paint on it and the landlord, who lived next door, mentioned how bad it looked sitting in the yard. 1 gallon of black house paint and a big brush took care of the problem in an afternoon. When I later sold it I remember watching the guy towing it up the road and the paint peeling off in sheets.

Part of the point with this method is that you don't have to spray the paint. Spraying necessitates masking, protective equipment, spray gun / compressor and whatnot. Rolling does not, it's enough to have a clean, well-lit area where you can do the job.
But of course it's possible to spray on Rustoleum too..

Is this hand sanding, Jim, or with some type of power sander? I do woodworking, but haven't ever sanded and painted a car or anything metal before.

Brushing sounds very time-consuming compared to spraying. How long does it take to roll or brush on 8 coats of paint like this?

Derek, I've found Rustoleum to be very hard to rub out because it dries to a somewhat softer, leathery finish (although very durable), rather than a hard finish like most enamels do. Rubbing compound doesn't seem to cut into it very well at all. A Scotchbrite pad on a D/A takes it down better.

In defense of my Rustoleum Volvo; 1: I didn't get frustrated or lazy, I only had a few days off and then I had to put my car back together so I could get to work. 2: it didn't turn out like crap, the only bad spots were a strip of orange peel on the hood and runny spots by the rain gutters. The rest was smooth and glossy. And as was demonstrated later, light buffing and color sanding took that stuff out.
The Rustoleum job is a pretty decent way to paint your car for cheap, but I don't know about long term durability and I definitely don't know about black, since it's not the original color and it's easy to screw up.
