I had to sell my reasonably intact BMW 635csi because I could always imagine I smelled deer in it.

I drove over an already downed deer at 80MPH. It was flailing, and none of the people ahead of me even slowed down! Not a single brakelight.

Lucky for me, the 635csi had about 3 inches of ground clearance, so the deer pushed back my front air dam, got stuck on something in the engine compartment, and exploded (ewwwww) all over the engine and underside of the car, before knocking my muffler loose.

I was on the verge of vomiting for the next hour as I drove home. The smell was unbearable, and even after about 5 pressure-washes of the undercarriage there were still crows pecking at bits of my car for weeks afterwards.

I'm normally not squeamish about those kind of things, but the lingering smell and remembering what I had to wash off of the bottom of the car prompted me to sell it shortly thereafter. The new owner couldn't smell a thing.

Then just hang it behind the car a little while with it idling, and you've got some good smoked venison!

How to avoid hitting a deer: (maybe)

Use the "Early warning Here I come Device" installed on your car. Commonly called the HORN. I know I know..... everyone says that does not work.... Been there done that", lived in the mountains of CA, and the hills of NV (11yrs total) and also drove cross, down an up this country. Many times thru deer heaven (UT, AL, CO, AZ, KY, GA, IL, OH etc etc etc) either just got lucky..... orrrr.. maybe I figured it out. Saw hundreds upon hundreds of deer on the side of the road and never got close to hitting one. Saw either their butts on retreat or them cautiously grazing aside the road with a look in their eye something like… “Man… glad I stayed over here in the grass” You see; like many things the answer can be -in the timing-.

When you see a deer and then blast your horn…. FORGET IT. That is to late. The idea is EARLY WARNING! You know like turn signals on a car. You WARN the person behind you a block or two IN ADVANCE that your going to turn. Well…. when you see a blind spot in the road in front of you, a curve, an exit ramp, a long stretch of rural empty road etc. HONK a short warning blast. Let those hidden deer, dogs, cats etc that may be there, know IN ADVANCE that your coming. Play a short tune on the horn if you want. Especially at night.!! You want the horn going off BEFORE they see your glaring headlights. Try to respect families and not do this near homes. I tried; but admit, I did use my horn on occasions in areas known to be bad for deer even though homes were near by.

I’ve been told that in the animal kingdom many animals first instinct is to STARE DEFIANTLY at the approaching enemy (Wild cat, dog, your vehicle, your headlights) before either attacking or retreating. Vehicles move little faster than there instincts have prepared them for. But their ears... that's a different story.

Seems to me those whistle things.... gets their attention in the wrong way. Makes them curious, tells them to look and up and see who is playing a tune. You know, to see if they want to join in the whistle band or just ignore you. Do you know anyone afraid of a whistle? (Except maybe a kid afraid of the wrath of his ball coach) Maybe a horn makes them cautious enough to be ready to retreat, cause its not just loud to them its an awful ugly sound? You know. Like loud, unbelievably lousy Karaoke singers.

Can’t guarantee nothing but like I said. It’s worked for me.

Just think, one day all of the animals will be dead and we won't have to worry about things like this.

Keep your fingers crossed.

You hit only one deer?

So far I have mowed down 4 with my '79 300SD and many more with other cars. I damaged both fenders, the grill twice, broke some headlights but the radiator is still intact.

Luckly, this is my beater Benz, so I wasn't to excited. Now if it had been my SDL.............

Brandon,

Just a slight amount of hood damage. Not enough that anyone else would notice. It opens and closes OK do I didn't try to fix it. And remember, this is the beater, only stuff that needs to keep it running is fixed. I did replace the grill, though: Twice.

This is what happens when the deer get sick of getting hit!

This is scary....
