Muffler pipe rusted: Can it be patched?
The pipe between the center muffler and rear muffler has some rusted holes on the top of the pipe. Can it be repaired by having someone weld a patch over the holes? A photo althought not to good is below.
The vehicle is a 1992 300 TE with 133K miles. |

Uncommon to rust through on the top of a pipe, but regardless you should replace the pipe. Repairs, if you can find a shop that will try, won't last very long. However, assuming you need to buy some time, I suggest a trip to your local auto parts store to see what they have for repair of exhaust pipe. Don't expect to get buy for long. Also, exhaust leaks are dangerous (carbon monoxide poisioning), and your car will probably not pass your state's inspection process.

I never had a problem having a rusted section of a pipe cut out and a new piece gas-welded in - mind you the guy who did it for me was a small one-man muffler shop. Check your area for such a shop.

The pipe before the rear muffler actually rust out on that top spot frequently, I dont know why. It's too bad because its part of the rear muffler and other than that hole, the rest of the muffler is sound.
I have repaired this on my wifes '94TE by cutting and shaping a piece of sheet metal (about 1 1/2"W X 4"L), smearing the inside with exhaust sealer and clamping the patch over the hole using 4 stainless steel hose clamps. The repair has lasted over 2 years and is still perfectly tight. |

Well the pipe from the muffler that connects to the center muffer was very rusty. See photos below for picture of my muffler mess. I'll probably just get a new rear muffler.
