Exclamation Aluminum door skin

A local new 300SD owner dropped by this morning for corrosion advice.

The fender alignment was wrong = replaced.
The doors where leaking white powder.
Looking under the door, you could see the OE skin rusted off.
Someone replaced it with a GLUED on thin aluminum skin.

The guide rod mount bearing brackets are missing 90% of the welded body brackets.
The Unibody sub-frame crumbled everyplace I touched with my hands.
The trailing arms had half inch rust holes.

Not safe to drive or worth repairing...

I helped him find a cheap ($800) local replacement body with a bad engine.

How many miles did the rusty car have? I didn't think that the 126 was that rust prone!

Actually, not all are rust prone. My '93 140 has 162,000 on it in Cleveland, driven in the winter. There are only 3 surface rust spots on the car and the undercarriage is clean.

Even my 126 wasn't bad considering it was hit 4 times (I swear it had an invisible target on it). When I got rid of it, it had some rust on it, mostly where the panels were welded in.

My '73 did have more rust, but much, much less rust than my sister's '72 Vega. That was pre ecoat, so cars rusted more back then.
