rust (pic)

This really worries me. how should I attack this. It is right by the rear door towards the bottom of the car.

Due to the complexity of the area, I would look for a shop that will cut out the damage, and weld new metal into the spot. It'll cost a bit more, but will be a much more permanent repair than bondo.

I can recommend someone...

a body guy in Mt. Airy MD (just south of Fredrick) who has restored my old VW convertible and done some really nice and fairly priced work on my 240D.

Wouldn't cost anything to let him look at it.

Not sure, but you may want to check K&K mfg to see if they have a repair panel for this area. They are inexpensive and pretty good to deal with ( think).

My day phone is 301-443-5972

adiaw83,

The photo looks a little like the problem is aggravated by some collision damage to the left of (I think that is aft of on the car), and above the area of the rust damage. Fixing the whole issue will likely require a shop with some experience to cut away the bad stuff and replace it with new metal or a new fender.

I read about a material called POR15 on this site, possibly another forum. POR15 is supposed to chemically alter rust to make the flaking and peeling stop, and turn what is left into a kind of hard, protective layer for whatever metal lies beneath. The reaction consumes water, so it works best in humid areas or when the rust is still damp. In cases where there are holes you have to put new metal back, but in the past this has always just put the area that rots through a little further away from the original spot, as it is very difficult to get all the original rust off. This stuff, POR15 is supposed to form a tough barrier sealing the remaining good metal off from rust, water and air to keep the area treated from rusting again.

So, to limit how much of your car needs to be replaced and give you some peace of mind that the repair will last, ask if your body shop has ever used POR15. I recently had a spot of rust near the jacking tube on my 1988 300E taken out, and then had the area, and any damaged undercoating cleaned up and sealed with POR15. The local shop was well aware of the stuff and used it.

Good luck and I hope this helps. Jim

There is a shop in Reisterstown Md called Auto Collision Specialist. Thier number is 410.833.5697. Ask for Dave and tell him Ari sent you. They are not on the cheep side, but consider the following:
They specialize in MBZ's. When I mean specialize, I mean specilize..complete ground up restoration.
I have seen 40+ cars that they worked on and they look great.
They do not do a quick "tape & spray" job, they paint it right..the first time.
If you you ask them to do a half a** job or a quickie, they will not do it. They do all jobs 110% and do not cut corners.
If you look at a car they have worked on, you can not tell it has been painted, they are that good.
I have been enveloped with cars my entire life and this is the shop you want to have your body work performed at, regardless of price!!

Good luck!!!
