Painting my MB

I have an 83 240D which is in big need of a paint job. The painting I'll be doing for I have all the equipment and some experience painting boats and tractors restorations, but none of those projects have been done with a base/clear finish.
This may be a stupid question, but what is the difference between an epoxy sealer and a 2k primer ?
