my 1985 500sel had was replaced after a wrech and the emblem that says mercedes benz under the hoodstar has the blue paint worn of. i looked under the hood benhind it there is a bolt holding something on ethier the grill or this symbol. can i replace it without replacing my grill

Yes you can. I just took the grey plastic insert behind my grill out to paint it black (looks really sharp) The bolt you mentioned, holds on both the plastic grill insert and the laurel badge. You can take the badge off with taking the grill off as there are several screws and clips that hold in the grill in place. I had to replace mine because the bolt was rusted and broke off when I was taking my grill off. I got a new one at the dealer for $10 (Canadian). It doesn't come with a bolt to hold it on, but they found one in the shop that fit perfect for me. I kept the old one and when you hold it next to the new one they are identical (the new one is much newer and shinier of course). Easy to do and cheap.
