Voltage

I recently got a sub installed with a 400w amp. The sub is a 15inch.

When the job was done the shop did a voltage test with this thing they plugged into the cig lighter and the car at idle was showing 12-12.5 then at 2000rpms at around 13.1 and this was with the system full blast for a test. When it was low it didnt make a difference...maybe point something.

They said it should be a bit higher or it can do damage to the sub.

Should I be worried? I have a spare alternator that I will replace it with or should I not go through the trouble?

did they install a capacitor too?

A Capacitor will sotre vooltage for the sub amp and allow it to not pull hard off the car's electrical system.

it depends, capacitors are roughly anywhere from $80.00 up depending on the brand and where you get them.

I paid over $150 for mine, but it has a digital voltage display on it.

ya maybe I should invest in one then but would I still be ok without one?

I seen the lights dim with the bass slightly but that was only when the system was going at its fullest which is not all the time.

I would put one on regardless. It boost the voltage tot he amplifier making it put out more power. Most amplifiers are rated at 14 volts. The capacitor will help the amplifier sustain the better power, and will put less stress on your alternator/battery.

I am going to add a second capacitor to my system, because I am pulling around 1500-2000 watts with my system, and a 1 farad cap is not enough for my amplifiers. I'll probably put in another 1 farad, or a 2 farad capacitor along with my existing one.

Of course I will be doing a full rewire at that time replacing all the speaker wire, and doing a whole new amp rack and changing out some speakers at that time.

I recommmend getting one it wont hurt the system, and to me it is a wise investment in the sound system.

I believe you would be better to upgrade the alternator and make sure the battery is up to snuff. My 2 cents....
