Wondering if anyone has had the following erratic behaviour? Recently I tried to engage my CD player of my 99 E320 4 Matic...message on radio said "NO CD CHANGER"...now I know I have one...The MB telephone will also not work during this problem. If I pull the fuse under the rear seat and reset it, they work fine for a period (as long as I have the cd player on). Additionally, the little viewing panel on the radio area appears to pulse dark then light both when it is working and when it goes out...the speed of the pulse changes. Any ideas what might be causing this erratic behaviour and how to correct it?
Thanks ![]() |

In your case, it almost sounds like it must be the radio itself. You can see problems like this with another bad component, like the changer itself is bad, or the phone PSE, or it could be a fiber optics problem 9fiber cable bent at too close of a radius, or the radio could be misconfigured, which means the version coding is not/was not set up correctlly when the components were added. i assume when this is all going on that you have no sound system audio?

Hi Gilly thanks for your prompt response.
When the problem occurs, I do have audio through the sound system for other functions such as the SATNAV voice, and also the radio sound works OK. It is just the CD that hisses. |

Hi Gilly...4MaticGuy here who posted the CD/phone problem...In fact I still get radio transmission fine...it's just the phone and the cd changer don't function when the problem occurs. It seems that as long as I keep the cd player engaged even after turning the car off...when I return it seems to be ok... except the pulsing of the display on the radio.
Thanks for your information... ![]() |

I have this issue as well. It generally resolves itself in a minute or two. Very random.

I had a 99 E430 for a few months last year. When I got it there was no indication of a CD on the radio and I presumed that the phone which was in the console had its control unit removed opening the D2B ring. One day when playing around I found that all the components were in fact there but were not configured at all. I reconfigured the D2B ring and everything worked even the phone to my amazement. I dialed the shop and the recording came on asking for a credit card since the service wasn't hooked up.
While the configuring couldn't come and go I like Gilly's idea that a bend in the optical cable or some other connection problem could come and go. The interesting thing is that the car with all these options didn't have the "sound system" option and did make sound from the radio without the D2B ring configured or working, which probably wouldn't be the case if the sound system was involved on the network.

Steve and others:
IIRC, the 210 never had an amp on the fiber optic ring, it was either hrdwired or maybe just a speaker upgrade, i wouldn't swear to any of this, but I don;t recall working a configuration on a 210 with "amp" in the ring. On the 220's and 203's, etc, YES, but not the 210 chassis. Gilly

Well, recently I stopped driving my MB for about 10 days...drove my Jeep. When the problem with the CD and phone was present, the display in the radio panel would pulse dark and light...so power appears to have been doing something. Anyways...it killed my battery over this time. When I jumpstarted my car, I had to reset my radio using the security number. Everything has worked fine for the past 2 weeks since the jumpstart...go figure!!!
Thanks for all the posts to help my problem...it seems to have found a way to fix itself! ![]() ![]() |

There was an option on the configuration screen for a sound system, I chose it the first time before checking for components in actual values. They may have just been there cause they represent general choices. Your reply does explain the situation and why the Radio still works when the ring is down.
