should i tell them what to do?
i went to some car audio place and they said sizes were 3 inches in the front and 3.5"s in the back.. iwas like wtf mate??? should i tell them they are noobs? should i tell them to make 4" and 5" fit in the back? do we need to cut away the sponge? and lastly should the thing be re-wired? or should i use the same? i heard it was impossible to wire the system with the old wires.. i was confused.....and im going to stay with the becker headunit for now... is that wise? im not looking for loudness to be heard around the block.. just enough for the inside which is what i have right now. does JL makes sizes this small because i heard they were one of the best audio speakers... can i get enough for speakers for around $250??

Is this going in a YUGO, a LADA , a Ford or a Mercedes..............
And what year and model. I got MB Quart speakers for my W123 6.5 in the back and 4" in the front for less than $250 and these were brand new.

I am not familiar with your model so I can't comment further. You might wasnt to edit your signature in User CP........to reflect what car you own. If you only have the one Benz people will know what one you are talking about even if you don't spell i t out in the post......see at the bottom of my posts how my vehicle information is displayed.

I have JL XRs in my Z and they are hardcore power hungery speakers.
Do you plan to run them off a head unit or an amplifier?

Here is some information that might be helpful:
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-ZyYWQam5bPn/cgi-bin/SuperProdGroup.asp?g=399&avf=N this is infomation that came up for your specific vehicle -- but you might want to re-enter it on the web-page (top right hand corner) just to make sure. In any event, its a good starting point.

Oh, well it's not really worth upgrading the speakers with a stock headunit. They're made to work with each other, I wouldn't be suprised if it sounded worse due to the speakers being less efficient (less output at the same power level).

Speakers are rated in terms of efficiency... so many watts per meter. Lets say stockers are pretty high (which they are) like 95-97 w/m perhaps. If you do go to something rated lower like JLs (mine are 88 w/m I think only) you need some BIG power to make up that sound difference. It's pretty profound. Even speakers like Polks (nice common speakers I run) which are in the lower 90s will hurt total output in terms of loudness, though you may gain some clarity. The OE system was designed to work together with pretty suprising clarity and quality at the same time. Crisp meaning what to you? ![]()

speakers at the moment give a sort of a raspy sound. there is almost no bass whatsoever. like no echo such as knocking on a piece of wood. if it goes down to about 75% loudness, then thats fine. i normalls have it at 30-40% loudness anyways

Well find out what size holes you have first for your car, once you do listen to some drivers that suit your budget and preference.
Then I'd look to make sure they're decently efficient too. I got your IM, I'll talk to ya tomorrow. ![]()

I have an '87 300E. I went through this whole odyssey a couple of years ago.
None of the speaker holes are a standard size - the fronts are 120mm, which translates to about 4 3/4". This means that 4" will be slightly too small, 5 1/4" will be slightly too big. The rears are slightly larger, maybe 130mm, you might be able to squeeze a 5 1/4" in, but I really wouldn't bother with upgrading the rear speakers. I'd rather have the imaging come from the front. A german company called Rainbow Audio makes a mid-fi speaker solution that is a direct fit, plug-and-play type deal. La Jolla Audio carries them, so does www.iqcaraudio.com (note that these guys ship from germany, or they did the last I checked. It takes awhile.). These speakers are VERY clear, bright, and will cost quite a bit more than the regular stuff. I have a pair in my dash, and the sound quality plus the easy installation was worth the price for me, but it may not be for everyone. The stock head unit kinda bites. You can keep it and just upgrade the speakers, but be careful about turning the volume up so much that it distorts. Also, it'll be hard to add an amp without upgrading the head unit to one that has pre-outs. The stock speakers sizes put out average mid-bass, but getting real bass into an early W124 is pretty difficult without a.) lots of power, or b.) opening holes in the rear parcel shelf. You could take out the rear speakers instead of cutting holes, but see how you like the sound with just the front first. |
