W210 "cd changer not found"

Have a 2000 E320, bought new, just hit 51k miles - wifes car. CD changer reports either "not found" or "empty" on radio readout. I had searched earilier and did in fact unhook power and fiber optic cables to changer and reinstalled, power-first order. Still the same result. Took to MB dealer yesterday for routine stuff and had them look at changer also. After runniing lots of diagnostics, they said need new changer, would be $500 exchange. I said no thanks, they charged me $48 to troubleshoot. Q can I buy a rebuilt unit cheaper somewhere else? What options do I have? I did searches on this and only found one dealer offering to sell changer unit for $599!!

I bought a used changer from eBay for about $150 with shipping. Make sure it's a fiber optic changer, and might also check to see if you can find the same part number,

I had the same problem on my 2001 ML 320, 2 months later I was cleaning it up with the radio on and the battery went dead. Replaced the battery and all is well again, no more problems! My benz guy said the same thing when I had it in for other work (replace it, not under warranty of course). Just a thought, batteries are around 125.

Cobra1. greetings. Exact same problem in my E55. For over three months I Did all the checks and remove and still changer not recognized. As it turns out, one night I left my fog lights on and caused the battery to dischraged. So naturally, i had to get a jump. And go figure, the cd changer has been working ever since! Cost, $9 for jumper cables...lol

Temporarily Fixed in 2003 C230K

Here are some steps I just did to get my CD Changer to work again after displaying the "No CD Changer" message:

1. With car off and all doors shut pull power connector out of back of CD Changer.
2. Turn ignition on but don't start car
3. Hold finger on eject button of disc cartridge while plugging power connector back into CD Changer. (this should eject the cartridge)
4. Insert cartridge back into CD Changer
5. Turn ignition off and take key out of ignition
6. Put key back in ignition and turn on but don't start
7. The CD Changer should be resetting (it will grab each disc one at a time until it has checked all 6 discs)
8. Push CD button on radio to play CD's

I think there is something electronically wrong with the changer. So this problem is bound to occur again, but at least I can keep it going with these steps until it completely craps out.
