Becker GP (ticking time bomb?)

When the wife started her 89 190e 2.6 this morning her radio made a "ticking" (relay like) sound. There was no display and the cassette drive spindles were in the down position (no cassette). She said that this has happened once before but after she turned the key off then on again the ticking went away.

I have ejected the gost cassette, turned the key off then on again but the ticking sound still remains. Also, the antenna is in the retracted position.

Help, any ideas on what is wrong and how to fix this? The car is stock.

thanks, Wayne

your cassette mechanism is continuously running. Not worth fixing radio. Go to Becker website - they will offer you a rebuilt exchange unit very reasonable. I did it and am not sorry. They are very nice people to deal with

Better yet, throw an aftermarket head unit in. The Becker GP is a poor complex design, and I couldn't see why anyone would bother keeping one around.

Thanks to all, I will contact Becker from their web site right after I install the waterpump and related items. Seems the rubber hose from the waterpump to the head had split and that is taking up all of my time.

This site is right, waterpump R&R on a 2.6 motor in a W210 body
(without a FLX-13, thanks Benzmac) is a real pain.
