Phone kit question - W124

Apparently my '90 300E had the phone kit option. I have an RJ45 connection screwed fast to the center console carpet just behind the wood. I am never going to use this and it's ugly as hell. Is there any reason that I can't just clip off the connector, heat shrink the wire ends and tuck it in underneath the console with the other wiring?
