How do I get the damn Becker out?

Hey everyone,
I've finally decided to change out the stereo in my car but I don't know how to get the old Becker unit out. I have a Chilton's manual but it says nothing about this. I'd like to be able to do the job myself to save some money. Is it hard to do all the re-wiring? Should I just leave the old wires in there? Thanks so much for the advice. I'll probably go with a pioneer headunit and pioneer speakers (stock sizes)

Alex

Here's a helpful documentary on removing and installing a stereo in a W123.

nice web page, but problem is, my stereo doesn't have any of those removable knobs that he talks about. my stereo is all digital with buttons.

I've installed a stereo in my friend's W126, and his original (Becker) unit is probably the same as yours. Here's how I did it.

Remove the ashtray. Then remove the two exposed screws behind the ashtray and pull out the ashtray frame. Look on the underside of the stereo and you should see two metal clips. Push them in, and pull the stereo out. Hope this helps.

Speedy is right. that's how I removed mine.

If you are going to install a high output stereo(35w/ch +) in w126, you may consider to add a pair of 3-way Yamaha Bookshelf speakers(@89/pair and Excellent sound) into those two trays in the back(if you don't need them).

Here is how:

Remove all speakers and tweeters from the box. (make sure you mark all wires connect to the little crossover accordingly). pull out the crossover. Cut the front layer(1") of the speaker mounting panel with a circular saw (power saw works better because the plywood chip easily and ruin the outside finish of the box).
Reinstalled all the speakers and wires. Next step, remove the back seat, back panel, and those 2 trays. put the panel back and install the cut out speaker panel on top. Hook it up to the stereo you will enjoy the great sound system.
