Quirky Radio/Stereo Issue

My '84 300D Turbo has a quirky issue with the stock stereo system. If I leave the radio on when I turn the car off, the next time I start the car the stereo goes off, comes on and keeps repeating this. On the other hand, if the radio is on when I start the car and then I turn it on it works fine. Any one run into this problem or have an idea why this would happen?
