1983 240D Radio not working!!!
 

My radio just suddenly stopped turning on. This is a manual radio so I need to turn a knob to click the radio on. A light no longer turns on to indicate that the radio is on and the radio doesn't either.

The only problem I can maybe think of is that I attempted to insert a cassette/mp3 adapter (shown below), and it somehow screwed up the whole radio. The cassette successfully went into the slot the first time I tried, and I ejected it without problem as well. I listened to the radio a few more minutes and turned it off. After coming back into the car, I tried turning on the radio and it was broken.

I JUST got this car so ANY sort of help would be greatly appreciated. From step by step directions, to helpful tips, to estimating how much is will cost to fix. Thank you

More than likely you blew a fuse. Check the fuses.

Do you know roughly how much it would cost to replace a fuse for a car like this by any chance?

I dunno, maybe 14cents?

Open the fuse box and if you haven't already done so, replace the radio fuse, which is similar to a VW fuse. Go to just about any auto parts store, they have them.

When my cigarette lighter went bad, it blew the fuse,when I was charguing my cell phone. Same circuit

Check the fuse first and then check the wiring to the radio. Do you have an automotive type electrical test light? They can be bought at Auto Zone for about $3.00 and are invaluable for chasing down electrical problems.

if its a becker grand prix its most liklet slowly failing,it may need a rebuild

It's a mexico cassette. Check fuse first, but it might be toast.

The most common issue for a DEAD radio...

On the back of the radio there is a pull tab.
The tab holds a 1/3 size glass fuse..

It will be one of these..

The fuse for the radio I believe is the same fuse for the dashboard light, and the dashboard light still works.

So I'm guessing it's the fuse right behind the radio or something with the wiring from the radio to the main fuse box.

Yeah, the radio has a fuse all it's own. On the back near the plug ins.

How exactly would I be able to access this fuse?

There are two ways:
* Use the MB radio removal tools to disengage the retainer locks, and slide out.
* Remove the ashtray + mounting bracket (two screws), and gently disengage the retainer locks, while reaching through the ashtray hole to push the radio out by hand.

It's funny, my radio just went out on my '83 240D too. Must be that time of year.

This was really helpful in finding the fuse, but now I don't know if it's blown or not. Should I be able to tell? This thing looks ancient and is filled with sand. It says T2/250D on it with a blue line on one side and a green line on the other.

Also, where on earth could I actually find a replacement for this? I googled the numbers you entered and nothing substantial really came up. An is it possible to use a different fuse that I can pick up from a local auto store?
