400E Aftermarket Stereo Installation
I just purchased a Clarion DXZ765MP Headunit for my 1992 400E, I already followed the easy step by step instructions on how to to remove the factory Becker unit and it was a breeze to do. Now, my only problem is wiring it to the factory harness. I already took it in to a local Best Buy and the guy shrugged and said he didn't have a clue on how to wire it up correctly...
So I'm thinking about doing it myself, I know how to solder and I have heat shrink tubing and everything, I just need some help. I need to know what each of the wires are on the factory side and which ones to connect them to on the deck side. Also, should I clip off the factory wiring harness or leave it intact? I had the Becker Grand Prix BE 1432 in my 400E if that makes any difference. Looking at the Clarion's instruction manual it lists these wires: Memory back-up lead (Connect to battery) Bus power lead (Connect to battery) Power lead (Connect to Accessory 12V+) Ground lead (Pretty obvious where to connect this) Illumination lead (connect to car power supply terminal) Auto Antenna lead (connect to car power supply terminal for antenna) |

I figured everything out myself but now I just have to find a way to rewire the speakers to the front dash...

OK I had the same BE1432 system in my 300E. Disconnect all the trunk amps if you haven't already. The speakers in the front doors and front dash are on the same wire pair from the factory. So you only have two pairs of wires directly behind the headunit for each side. This makes wiring the front speakers very easy. You will have to run new wires for the rear speakers, which is easier than removing all the door panels, and dash speakers. If you splice into the speakers right behind the head unit, you are effectively bypassing the fader too.
I have been running my (stock) paper cone speakers like this with factory wiring AND a 4-channel amp for about 4 years now.
