OK, now having started to drive my E55 I have focused on the stereo. Problems: doesn't sound as good as I have heard systems sound and also, which I need to get Mercedes to fix, it has ZERO AM reception.

I have the COMAND center, so what is the recommended upgrades. Speakers only? I merely want a high quality but not competition systems. I don't crank my system, but I do like clarity.

Is speaker upgrades sufficient? Do they make a huge difference?

Jesse, what was your experience and who did you go to?

Thanks,

If you have the Command system, your only logical upgrade is to change the speakers... for clarity, I suggest you try and change the mids on the dash. The problem is though... You need the sensitivity to be the same as your old speakers, else they will end up louder/quieter in the overall mix. I know this isnt the answer you want, but if I were you, I'd turn the stereo off, crack down a window, and listen to that V-8!!

Hi,Did you have your windows tinted? This will cause bad AM reception and if you had an aftermarket phone antenna installed this will do it also. Hope this helps you out!

I would get some boston speakers as they are really good all around speakers and should give you the sound you are looking for. If you have some money, look into a stealth sub in the trunk also as a sub really helps the all around sound experience. The E55 is a great car, you should need a stereo, you should just leave the windows down and listen to the awesome sound of the V8 instead.
email me if you have any other Q's, maybe I could recomend some stuff for you

"If you have some money . . ."? You kidding? The guy's got an E55 -- of course he's got $$$ (must work/play in Silicon Valley) I agree, tho' -- roll the window down and enjoy the engine.

Stereos are a glaring inadequacy in these cars, no doubt. However, they are engineered as one of the car's subsystems and thus get fairly complex. You should see the amalgamation I yanked out of my 500E!! Radio brain in trunk, two small aluminum boxes I presume were amps back there too; head unit that's just a slave came out of the dash, and several other components under the passenger footwell that did who knows?

It's tough to upgrade one part at a time, bottom line. However, Brian's suggestion is the most logical, but be sure to match the actual resistances of the replacement speakers to the ones that come out-put a multimeter on yours and determine its EXACT ohm-rating and bring a tester along when you go shopping. You'll be glad you spent the extra few minutes. And Enjoy your Ride!!

Michael's right... you need to impedance of the speaker to be right. Also, buy from a shop that can let you try speakers before buying....

Removing even a 'basic' stereo can cause problems, let alone something like the radio in your car which integrates with Command.

For this reason I would never have a new car for installing a stereo in.

Can I have a '92 500E to install a stereo, and a Y2K CL600 for a daily driver?? Donations in an envelope to:...

;-)

Brian : You are talking about the CL600, I have tried the CL55 today (it was a special invitation by MB). As I have tried previously the CL600 I must tell you that the CL55 is a monster, the CL600 is a joke near to it... When accelerating you are pushed in the seat and cannot move! The ASR-ESP is doing well his job but when turning it still slips a bit... I have been able to go on the highway with it, (unfortunatly I was not alone) the acceleration from 160km/h to 220km/h is terrific (stuck in your seats like accelerating from 0-100km/h) the other man with the CL600 was strugling to follow me. At the moment we stopped he said, "what the hell of an engine is under there!?"
Well just my opinion on the CL55. By the way I have no idea when it will be released for purchase, there is still no fixed price for it here.

Hehe... I was only joking... I'd have to save for a long long time (10yrs or so) for a CL55 or CL600.

One day maybe ;-)

David;
Have you done anything that helped your tunes out yet?
Just wondering. I was considering doing a subwoofer in my car, I think it lacks bass response.

Peter K,

Yes, you are absolutely right. But the problem is that David's E55 is equipped with COMAND....I don't think he would want the COMAND removed...(hehe, maybe get a Alpine one)...
