Please, could someone give me a better answer than a kid at the dealership? I bought this 88 420sel about 7 weeks ago with a new battery and started driving it back from NJ. used dealer to Maine and turned on stereo and it was flashing "wait", so I waited, about 40 minutes and then it came up "code", so I entered the code that the dealer gave me and it flashed back to "wait" so again waited for the "code" prompt and entered it again same thing happened only this time it wasn't flashing wait, it was on solid, and has been for the past 4 weeks everytime I turn the radio on. I tried leaving it on for an hour and nothing changed. The dealer said there was nothing they could do, this sounded like, "I don't know what to do", I asked, so I'm supposed to throw away this radio and start over , and they said , well we could get you a reman. radio. I can't believe I have to replace this radio for this reason, someone must know how to get back to be able to reset the code. Dealer ran vin. # and did not have a radio code come up. I know someone has the answer out there...Please Help! Thanks, EM

You probably do not have the correct radio code.
Has the radio been replaced in a previous life? (former owner) If so, you will have to remove the radio, get the serial number and your dealer will be able to contact Becker to get the proper code |

Code
You can also contact BECKER and they will send a you the code for a fee, they also refurbish them! After nine attempts the radio is locked out for 24 hours, I belive, but it has to be powered on to reset during this time. If it shows wait you have to leave it on for 1 hour. I hope you have the radio manual it goes thru it step by step. The Becker site/ forum has similar questions

You should have been given a card with the four-digit code on it.
If your car has a Becker radio (the original radio) then you can call Becker at 1-888-423-3537 x207 and talk to Ed Ebel about your problem. He might require you to send the face plate for the radio head in to them so they can reset the code and give you a new card. Ed can tell you what it will cost. If your radio is like mine, you can remove the face plate by taking two fairly stiff wire hangers and bending about 1/2" into an L-shaped end. You then go in through the cassette opening and hook the wires in the upper left and upper right corners of the cassette opening. Then just pull and the face plate should come off. |
