Post 560sl Audio help

I'm in the process of upgrading the stereo in my 1987 560sl. I bought a pair of Infinity Kappa 4" coax that unfortunately did not fit. Does anyone have any suggestions for aftermarket speakers for this car. Do i need to step down to 3 1/2" speakers?

Does anyone have any input to taking the stock head unit out. I'd rather install the head unit myself in order to save a little on installation costs. thanks ahead of time.

Hi, Dan
As for removing the radio from the dash of your 87 Benz there are two possible ways.

1) If you have an ash tray that folds out with a spring loaded door then you will need to do the following:
* Remove the black trim ring around the shifter.
* Open the accessory tray door in the middle of the console and remove the two (2) screws at the bottom of the front of the accessory tray and then remove the tray.
* Remove the single screw from the wooden gear **** panel that was hiding under the accessory tray.
* Lift up carefully the wooden gear shift panel from where you removed the single screw. It may require a little force just watch it. Too much force and you can crack or break the panel.
* After you have the panel loose slide it to the rear a bit. Make sure you have the gear shift stick all the way to the rear or the number 1 position.
* Now open the ash tray door and remove the ash tray itself by pushing the removal button on the inside right.
* Look inside where the ask tray was and find the two (2) screws at the bottom of the ash tray assembly. Remove them.
* remove the ash tray assembly by tilting it back and then lift it out. Leave the plug wires connected on it and just lay it off to the one side.
* Now you are ready to remove the radio itself. Locate the two (2) bottom clips that hold the radio in and one at a time pull down on them to release the radio. Put one hand inside the cass door while working on the clips, pulling slightly with your hand that is in the cass door.
* Disconnect the wires from the back of the radio and you are done.

If you have an ash tray that pulls out manually then follow these instructions:

* Open the ash tray door and lift up on the ash tray itself and lift it out.
* Look inside where the ask tray was and find the two (2) screws at the bottom of the ash tray assembly. Remove them.
* Now pull on the ash tray assembly to remove it.

Hope this information will help you save some money. If you need any more help or have any questions for me feel free to E-Mail me at (ljrepair@pacbell.net). This information is provided by La Jolla Audio Repair - Repair manager.
