				Bass Tubes in SL

Has anyone used the Bazooka Bass Tubes? In my latest Crutchfield catalog they show amplified tubes. I've been looking for something to give me better bass in my '79 450SL. I've have a Blaupunkt, Florida CD w/ Blaupunkt 200 watt amp. 3 1/2" Infinity Kappa's in the dash. Boston Acoustics 5" and 1" components in a custom enclosure that fits over the back of the parcel area. I'm thinking of mounting a bass tube to the bottom of the parcel area, under the speaker enclosure. Their 18" long and 8" high. Sounds like a perfect fit to me. sbr |

I have a SAS brand powered 10" unit in my SD. It's rated 85 watts RMS. It fills in the bass pretty well for me. You won't win any "loud stereo" competitions with them, but if you just want decent bass in your system I'm happy with it.. It also has an output to add a slave speaker too if you have the room. By adding another speaker you cut the ohms in half and bump the output up to 130 watts.

I had a 10" SAS Bazooka back in 1992 in a Mazda MX-6 I used to own. I was pretty active as a keyboard musician, so I needed my trunk space. The tube was a perfect compromise, since I could unstrap the tube and move it out of the way to make room for my road gear. I went for the unpowered unit, since I had a pair of Lanzar amps, with the bass amp bridged to 210 watts. I did blow the speaker out once (under warranty), but it gave me ample bass and no problems afterwards! It is still difficult to achieve good bass response in a convertible, but the Bazooka is the way to go! You will notice increased bass response when the top is up...even more so with the hardtop shell installed!

Actually I like bazooka tubes. they sound very good, and give good bass. My father has a 10" bazooka in his rolls, sounds good. The problem with convertibles and tubes in the trunk is its hard to hear them because of the trunk insulation. If you don't have the back seat in your SL, you can use the back part to install some sort of subwoofer. Alon

Ashman has a point. I used to have my tube in the trunk of my old Audi coupe, and it sounded great. But when I switched to my SD, it is about half as loud now because of how well the trunk is insulated. It still makes a noticable difference in the sound of the stereo tho'

Ditto on the trunk insulation issue...I had assumed your install was going to be the rear canopy. Check out www.************************. They make an integrated ported speaker setup designed to fit perfectly in the R107 models, similar to the Bose system in the R129 SLs.

I'm thinking of mounting it on the package tray, where a rear seat would be, in the passenger compartment, not the trunk. The gas tank is between the trunk and passenger compartments in a 107. Thanks for your input. Sounds like it's the way to go........ sbr |
