Unhappy Need info on how to strip car for audio installation

Hi,

I need to install a new stereo system on my 87 260E. I am running a cd changer, but need to install 4 speakers, sub, and amp. Does anyone know if there's an Accessory Installation Guide that shows how to take the dashboard, door panel, seat, carpet, etc... out for the installation of wires?

Also, a guide for the proper way of getting power... i.e. fuse box, to the components?

thanks...

Buy a service manual...

MB, Hayes, Chilton...take a look at ebay or buy one from fastlane/partshops. In the same manual you will find schematics for electrical system.

I got a hayes and is quite happy with it. The schematics are rather bad in hayes, IMO but I havn't seen the MB. I hope it's better.

Pretty straightforward actually. Front seats are held in with 4 bolts at each corner. Rear seat bottom pulls out with the two orange tabs. Backrest is held in with three nuts, two at each lower corner, one under the armrest. Pull up HARD to get it out. Door sill plates pull straight off and expose small white rivets which are easily removed. Once that is done, you can run most of the wires, no problem.

Oh, I'd recommend running the power to the amplifiers from the battery with an inline fuse, instead of butchering up your fuse box.

Talking Need info on how to strip car for audio installation

Great Info... thanks....

I should be able to get started with the info you've provided. One more question though...

Do I need to pull off the dashboard to get into/around the radio for uninstallation and wiring?

thanks....

yes, if you are planning on running wires from the head unit to amplifiers, you need to remove the under dash panels. On the driver's side, start by prying off the black cover around the ignition key. This will reveal some 8mm screws. Remove. Next, pull off the headlight switch knob and remove the large nut under it. Pry off the black cover around the headlight switch. Remove the 8mm nuts.

For this next step, you will need to block the wheels of the car to prevent it from moving. Release the parking brake and hold the handle out. You'll see some screws that hold the handle in place. Remove the handle and disengage the cable. Same with the hood release. Look at the bottom of the panel and you will see some 8mm nuts throughout. Remove. Pull the cover out and then down. If you feel some resistance, make sure you have removed all the screws!

The passenger side cover is removed in a similar way, but you must remove the glove box cover first. Pretty self explanatory. The screws are on the hinges for the glovebox.

power supply

If I remember correctly, there is a terminal block to the left of the drivers feet. I believe it's beneath a plastic cover under the floor carpet. This terminal block is for the purpose of accessory installation and will save you the trouble of running wires through the firewall. If you check with your local dealer they should be able to tell you which connectors are for circuits 15,30 etc. Also, there may be an unused pin at the pneumatic pump beneath the right rear seat. Again, if I remember correctly, this pin will be powered by circuit 15. Make sure you know what the power consumption of any components are before you use this pin.If you can use this pin your dealer probably stocks 4mm female connectors which can be easily soldered to your new wiring for a nice clean installation. This may also save you the time of running wires from bumper to bumper! Let me know how it goes and good luck.
