A 4 in speaker fits the dash board and the rear overhead location is an aweful place for speakers. The size in the rear is a 4 in and it is not easy to get it into the mounting bracket. The foam seal is usually turned to a gooie substance that gets every where. The 123 wagon is bad for speaker locations!
Good Luck! Scott@lajollaaudio

Easy Rear Speaker Fix for Wagon
I bought "cheap" 4" Pioneer coaxials at Wally World. 2 of the holes will line up with the holes from the factory speakers so the original screws were no problem.
Then, I took a roll of electrical tape to wedge between the roof and the speaker plate, made sure there were no wires there, and drilled an extra hole where the other 2 screws will go on the new speakers. Using sheet metal screws I was able to tap right in and secure the speaker just fine. Only challenge: I'm trying to figure out bypassing the fader: which wires go where? -shawn |

TD sound bites
I did four new speakers at the same time as replacing the head unit on my TD- first, the sizes that fit in the factory openings are tiny, and the rear speaker placement is horrible- I probably should have by-passed the fader, but as is, it truly sounds like absolute crap. I think the only way to get some decent sound out of a 123 TD would be to do some speakers in either the front or rear doors, and couple them with a subwoofer of some sort in the way back. The factory sound system was certainly of secondary importance when this car was designed, but then, that's why we all still drive them, so I am not complaining...

Most folks forget when buying new speakers that if the speaker's tweeter is sitting too high, you won't be able to get the dash covers back on. No good pushing on them either, unless you want that nice new speaker damaged. I went through about 3 different brands of 4" speakers for the fronts on my '85 300DT. I finally found a radio shop that knew their stuff and helped me pick the right one. I got MBQuarts all around. I don't remember the exact model # right now, but they went in with no worries.

Hi,
Every one seems to have a problem with the rear speakers in the W123 wagons. I look up on them as a blessing. Granted you'll need to do some fab.work but you could make a custom set-up with 6x9's in them, and if you have a surround sound processor you could have a nice surround sound set-up just like at home. That is what I'm going to do but it will take some work but in the end it will sound SWEEEEEET!!!!! Louis. |
