headunit wiring question

hey! i am installing a new JVC headunit. i've figured out all the connections except two. there are the 8 speaker wires and then 5 additional- ground, battery, illumination, remote, accessory.

one says "illumination" - I am assuming that connects to the 12V switched source- on/off ignition. is that right?

what is accessory for?

and remote is for antenna and amplifier i believe.

thanks for your help!

eric

Illumination goes to something that lights up when your headlights turn on. If you remove the AC control panel you'll see some teal colored wires, splice the illumination wire into one of those.

I think that on the JVC units, the buttons are always backlit even if the car's headlights are off, but when you turn the lights on, the display of the unit will dim a bit, so it's not so glaring at night.

wow that was enormously helpful!!! thank you speedy300Dturbo! that means i have to do some re-wiring.

so what should the on/off wire be connected to? "accessory?"

there aren't many choice
1. remote
2.accessory
3. illumination
4. battery
4. ground

im guessing either remote or accessory.

thanks

eric

1. remote - this is used to turn on external amps. however, you'll need to connect this to a wire in a black sleeve so that the headunit will power up the antenna. Bear in mind that now, the antenna will rise whenever the radio is on, but you can lower it manually with the switch of course.

2. accessory - connects to something that reads 12V when the key is turned to the on position. The positive lead of the cigarette lighter works well.

3. Illumination - as mentioned above

4. battery - connect directly to the battery or connect it to a source that reads 12V when the car is off.

4. ground - basically any brown wire

Do you have the Becker Grand Prix? Or the old style Europa? Because with the Grand Prix those wires are on the old harness which makes things a bit easier.

Thanks again for your help.

I used to have the new style becker grand prix. it was replaced by a high end blaupunkt which was replaced by a high end pioneer. and now im replacing the pioneer with the JVC.

so all the wiring is in place already. i just have to splice like wires together. i think ive figured it all out, now i just have to find that AC wire for the illumination.

thanks!

eric

If you remove the AC panel, there's a bunch of teal (blue-ish I guess) wires running to the bulbs... just use any one of those.

DONE! Everything thing seems to function as normal except one thing. I hate that i have to ask you so much advice speed300Dturbo, but you're helping me out a lot.

It seems that initially the headunit will turn on and off on and off while im driving. almost as if the connection is bad. it doesn't seem to be bad at all. but after driving a while (almost as if the unit has warmed up) it stays on consistently.

this may be what i feared- bad soldering connections within the unit?

The catch is, when the engine is NOT running and i have the stereo on, it never turns itself off and on.
