Radio reception options?

I live in a rural area coupled with an antennae mounted in the glass of my 98 E320 means terrible FM reception and nonexistent AM reception. Has anyone tried disconnecting glass antennae and rewiring one in the trunk or under the first aid kit or maybe attaching under the bumper? Any ideas?

I recall that on my inlaws 96 e320 they too had bad reception from the glass mount antenna-- however they live in North Suburban Chicago, they just could not tune in their favorite FM station well -- so they asked the dealer to install a powered fender antenna -- similar to those found on other models -- which improved their reception, but years later was the cause of a rusty fender.
