On a system that old, it was a "fixed" or "mobile" system, in other words the handset stayed mounted to the console (hardwired) and you couldn't just take the handset with you and use the phone, say in your office or home, it stayed with the car (ahhhh, the "good" old days!). The operating of the phone, called the TRU (Transmit/Receive Unit) mounts in the trunk. What of course you want to do now is convert it to what is referred to as a "Portable", which of course is a handset that will mount in the car and interface with the microphone and speakers. I would say that in my opinion, you're better off trying to get the aftermarket involved. Most GOOD installation shops should be able to utilize the existing components (hands-free speakers and mic) while giving you the latest style phone.
Gilly
PS they probably won't be able to integrate the in-dash controller (in the flip-open compartment) to a new style phone, but on a positive note they could easily remove the controller and you can regain this space for storage of things like sunglasses or garage door remotes
