01 - E320 wagon - another cd changer question
Hi
I am new here and also new to MB. Here is my situation. I purchased a cd changer on ebay. I could not find one of the plugs that connects to the cd changer. I have searched most of the posts relating to the installation of the cd changer in a E320 wagon. I searched the rear passenger wheel well. I finally found the missing connector for the player...it was plugged into something else next to the cd changer location. I unplugged it and plugged it into the cd changer and it works great. My question is.....what did I unplug it from? The phone unit? Do I need a splitter or another jack now for both? I dont want to fry anything..... Thank you for any help in advance.... |

There is nothing else it plugs into.... I have done many cars and never seen anything plugged into the stock 10 pin harness....This is where I put the alpine cdc when I install it in a 124 wgn.

Is the car equipped with a phone or not (factory phone)?
Does the phone and CD player now work? The fiber optic cable on a wagon is located behind a piece of formed insulation that is torn out if the CD changer is installed, the electrical plug is there too, so you found the electrical connector but had problems finding the fiber optics cable? Gilly

Thank you for the replies.
Yes the car is equiped with a phone that I do not use because I do not have the phone itself. The cradel is there so I assume that the other parts are as well. There is a ten pin connector hanging loose back there but it did not match the cd changer I bought.(Factory corect) The plug that was plugged into something else that I took...fit perfectly into the cd changer which now works great. I just don't know what I unplugged.. And if I will damage anything by leaving it unplugged. It is a black box about 1 inch thick and 8 inches long and is mounted next to I think the amp. (Right rear) The plug I took has two small probes on it and is the larger of the two that plug into the cd changer. There does not seam to be another like it back there. Thanks |

I believe what was unplugged is called the PSE (NOT the PSE for the door locks and so forth, as others might try to correct me on, this PSE stands for "Phone Support Electronics", the other PSE is "Pneumatic System Equipment". MB also has recently referred to this disconnected component as the "HSE", which stands for Handset Support Electronics, to avoid confusion with the 2 PSE's).
In short it provides handsfree interface for the phone onto the soundsystem. You could never really seriously damage anything with the fiber optics system on your car. The larger connector you speak of is the fiber optics connection, I'm sure you noticed the 2 big "wires" on the connector and the 2 "probes" on the end, you have to be careful as that is actually the fiber optics lines, so don't damage, kink, splice, cut or mutilate those lines! To be "perfect" the radio internal configuration should be changed (this is done electronically with a MB shop computer) to show that the other component in the fiber optic system is a CD Changer not a cell phone. If it seems to all work OK I wouldn't worry too much though. Pretty weird the car had the phone but no cd changer when you bought it! Did you remember to remove the transport screws when you installed it? And did you check the suspension setting on the changer? Gilly
