Remedy For Nasty Looking Defroster Grid

My 87 300D has an ugly defroster grid. I started with Windex and it didn't help. Tried denatured alcohol and it worked a little better, but there's still crappy looking spots all over.

Thinking of going to a mild abrasive like Bon Ami. Which does a wonderful job on the exterior glass. Nothing beats it for getting road grime off the windows.

But before I screw this up I was hoping for some input from those who have dealt with this before.

Any thoughts?

i don't understand yet - is it the defrosting conductors which look bad or the glass in between them?

The conductors are mildew looking and the immediate adjacent glass is where the issue is. I may have answered my own question though. Yesterday I started cleaning a small area using a paste made with Bon Ami
and water. Using a sponge and rubbing horizontally. Messy job.It cleaned 95% of the stuff off of the grid in that area. Looks pretty good. Not good as new. But acceptable.

I pulled the rear shelf out today to give me better access to the entire glass.
Going to see someone tomorrow about a dye job on the shelf and the fabric trim around the doors. Palomino.

I hope to get back on the cleaning tomorrow.
