etched dirt in alloy

because of a draught, haven't been able to clean my wheels in weeks, finally when I washed my alloy rims there were black spots - etched in brake dust? neither wax, or a mild solvent removed the spots, Would claying do the job, has anyone tried clay in these circumstances.
