I've got a question for any Megaiur's experts out there. Which waxes bennefit from multiple layers? I know some waxes (and of course cleaner/polishes) will pretty much remove whatever is below them, so it wouldn't be advantages to apply multiple layers.

I have used, at one time or another, the following:
Gold Class
#7 Glaze
Quick Detailer
Quick Wax
NXT
Carnuba

For best results, should any of these be put on in multiple layers?

IMHO there are very few if any waxes which benefit from multiple layers of wax. Now if I made that comment on Autopia or to a Zaino fan I would get flamed.


Typicaly Meguiars recommends two very light coats rather than one heavy coat. If the wax is polymeric like Gold Class and NXT you should space those coats out 24 hours to allow them to properly set. The two light layers will insure a uniform coat on the paint.

According to Mequiars:

Pure waxes can be layered.

Another case where layering is possible:
cleaner wax and then pure wax.

I once sent an email to Mequires about time between layering:
cleaner wax + Mequiars # 16 (pure wax).
According to reply, I can apply Mequiars # 16 right after buffing the cleaner wax.



A mystery:
TurtleWax Platinum Series Ultra Gloss Liquid or Paste is cleaner wax. However, they recommend multiple layer for more shine.
Before Platinum Series, TurtleWax did not recommend layering because their waxes were cleaner wax.

I layered Mequires NXT and was very pleased with the results. Best product I ever used. Second coat appeared to shine a little more but it was so close its hard to tell.

Zaino, NXT, First Finish, Liquid Glass are polymers and can be layered. Waxes (carnauba) dissolve the first layer (to some extent) and therefore can't be layered like the polymers.

According to Meguiars, "pure wax" here means wax (or polymer, sealant, etc. made of Carnauba, synthetic, or mix of those) that does not contain cleaning agent.

Whether or not you layer, Ashfin is correct that 2 thin layers are better than one thick layer. Zaino's instructions also make this same point----> keep your layers very thin. You can greatly reduce the time needed between treatments by using their accelerator, which speeds up the polymer cross-linking process. If you don't use it, I think they say to wait something like 24 hrs, depending on temperature and humidity.
