heres a pic of what was in my oil pan.????
I have a 617.910 it lost oil pressure and im a little stumped here. I dropped the pan today and fished out this metal ring and a flat piece. I dont really know how to tell if the pump is good or not. The chain turns fine when cranking.
Thanks for any help. Dan The link below is the pic. |

Failed vacuum pump? Did you find the rest of those ballbearings? Seems the last person who dropped their pan recently did so because of a failed vacuum pump and he had a handfull of ballbearings in the bottom.

no ball bearings
No ball bearings...what is in the picture is basically all there was. But is the vacuum pump part of the oil pump to cause loss of oil psi?

The vacuum pump is not a part of the oil pump, it is the pump that provides vacuum on a diesel engine. It is block mounted, just about over the oil pump I believe. If the vacuum pump grenades it can take out an engine. Are those pieces from your vacuum pump? I don't know, simply spectulating there.
Just recently there were pictures posted of the pan reminants after a vacuum pump was caught before it grenaded. The pump bearing went bad, started knocking and was replaced. In the pan were a handfull of ball bearings and a few shards. There is nothing in your picture to gauge size, but based on the number of ballbearings that ring looks like it should have, I'm guessing if could be the vacuum pump bearing. Any one of those balls could have possibly wiped out the oil pump chain I suspect. If only the oil pump chain was wiped out, the timing chain would still rotate the cam shaft. All speculation on my part...anyone else care to chime in?

The oil pump has a very short chain running it from the crankshaft. Could be it broke, but that would be rare indeed.
Still you lost oil pressure. Start by checking that. You should be able to either see, or at least feel the oil pump chain, as I recall it is on the front of the pump, with your fingers. Have someone turn the engine over slowly with a bar or rachet on the front crankshaft nut and see if that oil pump is still turning. Even if the pump turns, you may end up taking it off. Seems likely whatever you found there has made it into our oil pump and is plugging it up. I think you can get the oil pump out with the pan off. If that is the case I think you will want to change the oil pump chain and the pump. I think I spent about $350 for the pump and chain. I replaced them a few ago with a used engine I installed. Had the engine out and intall was not that hard then, don't know about doing in the car though. |

Thank you Mike for the input. The size of the ring is about 3/4 inch dia.
I assumed the oil chain was the cam chain that we are looking at here. Will the oil pump chain be accessable after the pump is dropped or will there be more to do to get at that. And if that indeed busted due to the possible vacuum pump failure is it possible that the two items can be replaced successfully, or is it more likely that im looking at pulling the engine and rebuiling it? Greg..my email is working fine....not sure whats wrong. danlaura@solidnet.com |

the whole story
Well everything was fine, then the motor just stopped at freeway speed...like I turned the key off. When I tried to start it again..it just dragged. Jumping did not help. Replaced the starter with a new one. Same thing. Pulled the injectors and they had no spray just dribble. New ones, now the car starts with no oil pressure, and the metal findings in the pan.
thanks again for any help. |

Take a look at the oil pick-up screen, pinch the 2 tabs of the large snap ring (lower left quad. of your pic) and the screen will drop out. See what you find in there, The screen can break and permit large bits of crap into the pump gear housing...

I will post up another picture tomorrow when I get off my 24 hour shift..... And I will see what kind of "crap" is above that screen.. Thanks again benz friends. |
